Christmas Do

Our Christmas Lodge was held at Dagger Lane at 1800hrs. I got there with some time to spare so had a full fat coke without a glass (I enjoy drinking out of the bottle, but wouldn't do it if there were ladies present.) I got changed and went upstairs to the temple. It was to be a brief meeting so it was opened in short form, and the minutes of the last meeting were confirmed. There was the a ballot for a new member which was successful. The Charity Stewards and Almoner's reports were read.

There being no other business the Lodge was closed in due and ancient form. We hurried down the stairs to the Festive Board. This being the Christmas Lodge, ladies could attend the Festive Board. It is always a delight to see them.

There having been an outside let at Dagger Lane until six o' clock, I went to help set up the tables and decorations and was politely told to go sit down as everything was under control. (The person who told me this is not someone you argue with so I did as I was told.) I went to the bar and now ordered my usual two full fat cokes with a glass this time.

When everything was ready (and it all looked good) we all made our way to our seats a seating plan had been prepared and I was sat with Jack Chapman and his family. This I did not mind; I have known him for over thirty years. Jack is the Lodge Preceptor so dishes out the ritual for the next few Lodge meetings. I have also known his wife Denise for over fifty years as I used to sit next to her at school.

Being the Lodge Christmas Function we had waitress service. Since Julie took over as the Dagger Lane cook the standard of the meals has greatly improved; this meal was no exception. We had Cream of Tomato soup served with a bread roll and butter to start. The main course was Roast Turkey with Stuffing and Pigs in Blankets, served with Roast and Boiled Spuds, Broccoli, Carrots, Brussel Sprouts, Rich pan gravy and Cranberry Sauce. I had a Cheese Board for dessert. There was also mince pies and chocolate mints and crackers. Keep up the good work Julie I did not hear one complaint about the food.

There were various Raffles held and a Christmas quiz. I did not win on either but the Lodge raised alot of money for charity on the night, I believe it was over £400. We all then sang a selection of Christmas Carols: O Come all ye Faithful, While Shepherds watched their flocks by night and finally Winter Wonderland. We then sang an interactive Twelve Days of Christmas, the group I was in sang Eleven Pipers Piping so we did not have a lot to do. However, I was presented with a bottle of Grumpy Santa Beer. I know I have a white beard, but the Brethren seem to think I complain a lot, bless their little cotton socks. I never ever complain about anything.

The evening came to an end with the traditional singing of Auld Lang Syne. What a brilliant night had been had by all. I gave a lift home to Eddie Wildman, who had already accompanied the Twelve Days of Christmas for a dozen meetings this year. When I got home I was very tired but it was worth it.

7 days till Santa

Our last Lodge meeting of 2025 was traditionally a short meeting and a White Table Festive Board, this was meant to be no different, but fate and the Masonic Hall letting conspired to make it so.

A Security Firm was doing training all week in the dining area, They were not scheduled to finish till 1830; we would normally be gathering our guests at this time, we had to play it canilly.

First the meeting, a short meeting done on a short form, no parade no singing opened with a knock. It all felt very different to normal! After the minutes we were into the business of the evening, first we had a ballot for a candidate, We carried out the Ballot with a show of hands and it was passed. Good job really as the candidate was joining us at the festive board. We had reports: most had been circulated by email but there was an addendum to the Almoners report. After the risings the Lodge was closed in due and ancient form and we went downstairs to set up for dinner!

The Worshipful Master and both his wives (Marie Proudly is Acting Assistant first Lady) and a select few volunteers set to work setting up tables and decorations laying cuttlery and getting the prize trolly decorated. Lots was happening and guests were arriving; the bar area became fuller as we had fifty people to cater for.

W Bro Eddie Wildman "asked me" to deliver the song sheets and the traditional 12 days of Christmas cards also could I get some volunteers to hold the Words for "We Wish You a Merry Christmas", more on that later.

In record time the dining area went from zero to hero and we were ready to get people seated.  It didn't take very long, I guess they were hungry. After finding our seats we introduced ourselves to those we didn't know and Grace was said. 

We pulled our crackers and donned our crowns and the first course of Tomato Soup was served, the room went very quiet as the soup was consumed. Marie came round and informed us that the gifts from the crackers were in a bowl on the table so we distributed these and read the jokes. The main course was Turkey with Stuffing, Pigs in Blankets, Roast Potatoes and Parsnip with other seasonal veg. I witnessed a lot of empty plates being returned to the scullery. Dessert was a choice of Traditional Pudding or Cheese and Biscuits followd by tea coffee and aftereight mints and mince pies. I delivered the song sheets now, whilst I could still move! After thanks were given we raised our glasses to the King (every one sounded in good voice for the National Anthem, this boded well for the carols) and to the Grand Master. next came......The Quiz.

A well prepared quiz form was sold to each table and we set about answering the general knowledge questions, Our table did very well with these but we let ourselves down on the film questions, we misunderstood what was being asked for, but we still scored well enough to feature in the tie breaker. Alas, W Bro Shaun Rennison's table knew more trivia than we did and won. 

Next came the raffle, an abundance of prizes all on a trolly to be delivered to the winner and a ticket drawn by them to keep it moving. Julie and I won a prize each so we were happy.

It was now time for the grand finale, the carols. My team for We Wish You a Merry Christmas performed their task admirably (we only got a little lost) and after that I presented Bro John Burton with a Bottle of Beer (Grumpy Santa Ale) Eddie performed his Christmas Poem and we finished with White Christmas, It was time for the last Merry Christmases and good nights, and a good night had been had by all.

Monday 1st December 2025:

First Day of Christmas.

Humber Installed Masters 2494, had its regular meeting; it was a White Table Dinner and Julie was available so we went along. The evening meeting was a business night, sadly Worshipful Master Ian Sydall was still not able to attend so V W Bro Bill Glanville once again stood in.

Upon arriving we entered the Lodge and were greeted by many friends and Brothers, I signed both myself and the car in and went to the bar for refreshment. We sat with Mike and Jean Shakesby and the conversation flowed. 

It was soon time to robe up and go to Lodge, I was asked to be Inner Guard. (Pity it wasn't Tyler I knew the lines for that role!) The opening hymn sung, the lLodge was opened and a portion of the Ancient Charge read, On with the agenda: elect a master for next year. W Bro Craig Maurier was to be the next Master but a late change bought Hiten Thaker into play and he was elected to be the incoming Master. The other positions in Lodge were filled, we successfully balloted for two joining members and then the Lodge was closed.

The ladies were then invited up to join us and we were treated to the final performance of the Daggards. The Cast were Eddie Wildman as Zig, Phil Daniels as Zag, Neil Armstrong as the Worshipful Master kidnapped by aliens, and the Narrator was Craig Maurier. A parady of a children's cartoon with aliens and masons, I found the sound effects by Eddie particularly worthy of mention. All too soon it was over and we retired down for our first Christmas Dinner. 

The menu, Prawn Cocktail or Tomato Soup, Roast Turkey or Salmon, Christmas Pud or Cheese and Biscuits was set about after Grace was given. A surprise of Mince Pies were served with the tea and Coffee. After thanks were returned we made two toasts and then W Bro Eddie Wildman, back from his role as Zig played a selection of Christmas Themed Hymns and Ballads before rounding it off with the Twelve Days of Christmas. My table drew "Two Turtle Doves" so we had a lot of ups! We didn't win on the raffle but we enjoyed our evening and early Christmas Dinner.

Saturday 29th November 2025:

Which Way Now?

A rainy Saturday morning, it was still dark when I picked W Bro David Whittall up from his house and we set off to Nether Poppleton. Before we set out we loaded three large boxes and a carrier bag of toys into my boot, toys for the Bernardo's appeal. The Lodge done good!

After an uneventful drive we arrived five minutes early, but the gates were already open so we pulled up and offloaded the toys. I was knackered and the event hadn't started!

We furnished ourselves (thank you Julie Glanville) with tea and biscuits then meeting and greeting began. The opening address by the RWPGM was to be at 0930, we assembled in the lecture theater where we were told the PGM's wife was unwell and he would not be attending, We wish her well and a speedy recovery. So it was left to DPGM Bill Glanville to open the event. He asked for bids on a four foot tall carrot to raise funds for a local charity, it had its own seat!

The first talk was on Community Engagement, why we need it, our changing role and the formal launch of a seven-year plan to improve our standing in communities. 

The second presentation was on Building Together, this was the official launch in this Province, it means Masons joining are on a four-ceremony journey and the circle has turned to a pentogram. I am not going into any details as it will be explained at workshops across the Province for all who are willing to go with the flow.

During the morning there were further presentations from Province including actions from the Secretariat and Solomon Diploma Presentations.

We broke for lunch, a buffet selection of sandwiches, pies and quiche were available with tea and coffee, there were also mince pies and cake. 

After lunch we progressed to the Workshops, these were a more in-depth presentation of where we are going, I chose the membership workshop and was very impressed with the organisational changes and support available. I hope to use some of it in the near future.

After a short break it was back to the lecture theatre for the final presentations, The Armed Forces Covenant was covered in a positive way and Men's Mental Health was updated from last year. It was then handed over to V W Bro Bill Glanville to close the event and we set off for a very rainy journey home having made a substantial advancement in our Masonic knowledge! 

 

 

Thursday 27th November 2025:

A Second, a 50th and a Cheque!

It was to be a busy night, the roads were busy, the Town appeared busy and the Lodge of St Michael was certainly busy.

I had picked up W Master David Whittal at 1630 for  an 1815 start, we arrived at the Lodge at 1745! The journey should take no more than 30 mins. After parking the car we met W Bro Peter Barnes at the door and we assisted him into the Lodge.There were loads of people in the bar and the chat was good; I met and greeted as many as I could before getting Peter from his wheelchair to the Lodge room.

After signing in then dashing down for my gloves I took my seat in Lodge and proceedings started. The WM and his Wardens paraded in, we sang the opening hymn, the Lodge was opened in due form and salutations given. There were then knocks at the door, the Deputy Provincial Director of Ceremonies was admitted and he announced that the Deputy Provincial Grand Master VW Bro William Glanville was outside and he demanded admision. "Please admit him under your direction," said our WM and so the evening began.

After introductions and salutations etc. the minutes were approved and we got into the second degree ceremony.

Bro Ashley Fairburn was the Candidate, he answered the questions with confidence in a clear strong voice. a great start. He was given the key for re-entry to the Lodge and was sent out to make ready. The Lodge was opened in the Second Degree.

We took the Almoners and Charity Stewards reports during this break.

Bro Ashley was readmitted and shown round the Lodge to the Senior Warden W Bro John Broughton. he introduced him as being prepared and Bro Ashley was taken to the dias and Obligated into the Fellowcraft Degree.

He was then given the secrets of the degree by W Bro Peter Wright, these were then tested by the Wardens; at the Senior Wardens Chair he was invested with the badge of a Fellowcraft Freemason.

W Bro John Broughton gave the Address at the SE Corner and was closely followed by David Broughton who presented the Working Tools. Bro Fairburn now left the Lodge to resume his comforts and we resumed working in the first degree. 

When Bro Ashley returned to the Lodge he was treated to the Second Degree Tracing Board presented by Bro John Burton, a performance that was word and tonally perfect. Much respect to John.

The WM presented the DPGM with a cheque for £500.00 for the Festival, the Lodge is very close to getting  Vice Patronage of the Festival.

Under propositions I proposed a Candidate to join the Lodge he will be balloted for at the next meeting.

The Lodge was set out for a question and answer session for the Presentation of our Preceptor's 50 years presentation. VW Bro William Glanville and W Bro Jack Chapman took center stage and in a "This is Your Life" way they reviewed Jack's life and Masonic career. He was presented a certificate and a 50yr pin.

After the risings and greetings the Lodge was closed, and photographs were taken. 

We mustered in the dining area for the Festive Board, I heard many comments about how good it was to have a full Lodge and a full Festive Board. The menu was Chicken and Veg Soup, Roast Pork with Stuffing and Crackling followed by Apple Pie and Custard or Cheese and Biscuits. Judging from the empty plates I carried back to the scullery it was very popular.

We proceeded into the toasts, The King , Grand Master, Grand Lodge Officers, PGM and Provincial Officers. The DPGM responded to the 5th toast, he was very complimentary about the ritual in lodge and credited W Bro Jack Chapman for keeping us in order. He bought greetings from Province and advised the Lodge on what events were happening in the forthcoming weeks.

I was involved in helping W Bro Peter to his taxi and missed the next few toasts only rejoining during the Visitors responce given by W Bro Tony Calvert. 

Apparently, in my absence I had won some cans of beer in the raffle, The Lodge had collected toys for the Barnardo's appeal and we had gathered over 60, not too shoddy for a Lodge with a high average age. 

Finally the Tyler's toast: Happy to meet, Sad to part Happy to meet again. I got my car from Zebedee's Yard at 10:58 (the car park closes at 11! That was close.)

Monday 10th November 2025:

A Brother's First Visit

After initiating Brother Marland Faulkner, my next objective was to get him out on a visit, preferably to witness a first degree ceremony. Circumstances and the omens were not kind and several initiations came and went but we couldn't make it to them.

Then as if coming from foodie heaven Wyke Millennium 9696 had a first degree on the calendar and we were available and so was the Worshipful Master David Whittall, so arrangements were made to travel in one car and enjoy an initiation ceremony at Wyke.

Being November the weather was, as always, unpredictable. Last week we had no rain forcast, this week it is not going to stop! Driving to the Avenues to pick Bro Marland up I could not see very far in front of me the rain was so heavy. When I arrived the rain eased so it was off to pick up W Bro David. 

With the rain we had already had and that which was still falling the route I had chosen was not the best so we headed for Beverley and a cut through the town centre to get to Tickton Grange. 

We arrived in good time and set about meeting and greeting (an apron had been arranged for Bro Marland)  and paying for our supper.

After signing in I noted visitors from seven other Lodges far outnumbering the members of the Lodge (must be the food, I thought to myself.) 

We took our seats in the Lodge room and shortly after the WM W Bro Malcolm Grange (pictured at Tickton Grange on a sunnier day) and his SW Bro Ian Sharpe and JW W Bro Roger Lewis paraded in. After the Master welcomed the visitors, we sang the opening hymn and the Lodge was opened.

Unusually for an Emulation Lodge a Portion of the Antient Charges was read, Then on to the main event, the Initiation of Mr Barry Egdell.

The Candidate arrived at the door, properly prepared and was admitted into the care of the Deacons. He was led around the Lodge and passed by the Wardens before being presented to the Worshipful Master for Obligation. This done, the Lesser Lights were presented by W Bro Andrew Cook. The Traditional Dangers and Secrets were presented by W Bro David Taylor. Bro Egdell was conducted to the NE Corner where W Bro Ian Sharpe addressed him. 

The First Degree Working Tools, Warrant and Book of Constitutions was presented by W Bro Kevin Shilcock after which Brother Egdell retired to restore his comforts. During his absence we had reports from the Almoner and Charity Steward.

Upon Bro Egdell's return Bro Tom Baxter gave the Charge to complete the Initiation Ceremony. Normal Lodge business resumed and after risings and greetings the Lodge was closed and the closing hymn was sung.

Refreshments were collected from the bar and we found our seats for the Festive Board, Tonight the menu was Beetroot cured Salmon, Roast Beef with Yorkshire Puds and roasted Veg. Orchard Crumble with Vanilla Custard followed, all were very nice.

The first five toasts were given and drunk, then number six was to the newly-made Brother; his Proposer Bro Chris Wall (also Junior Deacon) gave a little background after which we sang the Entered Apprentice Song (Forming a Masonic Chain for the Last Verse) Brother Barry responded well.

After the Visitors Toast (WM Technical Lodge 5666 responded) the raffle was drawn, I was one ticket away from first prize, W Bro David Whittall had won a hamper of Craft Beers. 

Next up was the Tyler who gave the parting toast and it was time to go home. Thankfully it had stopped raining so we made our weary way homeward happy to have met and happy to meet again. 

 

Thursday 23rd October 2025:

Short and Sweet (Regular Meeting)

And there we were, fourth Thursday of the tenth month and at 18.15 we opened the Lodge.

Before this almost everybody had endured some sort of traffic issue, bridges in Hull closed causing backups on all routes, anyone would think they didn't want us using cars!

Arriving at Dagger Lane we parked in Zebedee's Yard, a short walk to the Lodge, and cheaper than Princes Quay. 

Inside I ordered a tonic water and a 0% alcohol beer for The WM W Bro David Whittall, There was a new beer on the block "Nout Peculiar" a Theakstons brew I believe. Apparently it was very nice.

So we robed up and signed in and it was good to see both Brothers Anthony Tyler and Adrian Thompson in Lodge after a period of absence. The agenda tonight promised two talks, one on Lodge Building and History. The second was to be an introduction to the Cornerstone Circle. Sadly our presenter fell ill and we wish W Bro Nigel Bell a speedy recovery and next time we have a space he will be invited to fill it.

There being no other business after reports we closed the Lodge and retired down to the Festive Board.

The menu tonight was beef pie with seasonal veg followed by apple crumble with custard It all looked very delicious and the empty plates I cleared from the table said that it was.

There being no visitors we only did two toasts and the Tylers Toast after which we formed a Masonic Chain and sang Auld Lang Syne. Homeward bound; weary but happy to have met. 

 

Friday 10th October 2025:

De La Pole 1605

It has been a busy week with one more meeting, the Installation Meeting at De la Pole Lodge where W Bro Malcolm Forbes was to be placed into the chair of King Solomon.

W Bro David Whittall picked me up promptly at 1615 and we set off to Beverley Road Lodge for the ceremony. Despite suicidal cyclists and kamikazi ambulances we made it safely with plenty of time to spare. We partook of the offered tea and cake (lovely bit of fruit cake) and mingled with the Lodge members and guests. 

Having signed in and refreshed we dressed for the Lodge and made our way up the stairs, entering the Lodge Room where W Bro Eddie Wildman was keeping the Brethren entertained with some classic tunes on the organ, always a good sign to see Eddie.

We took seats behind the Senior Deacon where I could get a good view to take notes. The outgoing Master Malcolm Brocklesby greeted all of us and opened the Lodge, and there was a report or an alarm, it was not established which, but W Bro Marcus Whearat of Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge 9611 was at the door requesting entry. "Admit him" said the Master and after salutations Marcus reported that W Bro Tony Randle was at the door representing ME Grand Master and requested admitance. An Escort of Provincial Officers was formed and the Representative was admitted. Now on with events.

After a portion of the Ancient Charge, Minutes and Reports the WM opened the Lodge in the Second Degree, W Bro Ben Kelly was asked to be Installing DC and W Bro Phil Cowling Installing Chaplain. W Bro Forbes having been in the chair previously was reminded of his obligation and re-took the oath as Master Elect.

The Lodge was now opened in the Third Degree and all offices declared vacant.  W Bro John Taylor was asked to take on Installing Senior Warden and W Bro Peter Robson Installing Junior Warden; W Bro Jimmy Kerr was Installing Inner Guard.The outgoing team passed around the Lodge and the W M thanked them for their work during his year.

All below installed Master were then asked to leave for a short time, a Board of Installed Masters was formed and the ceremony of Installation took place culmulating with the investment of the IPM. The IPM then closed the Board.

Master Masons were readmitted and gave salutations to the newly installed Master. Bro John Holmes presented the Working Tools. The Lodge was lowered to the 2° by knocks.

Fellowcrafts were readmitted and salutations given; Bro Mike Kelly presented the Working Tools. The Lodge was lowered to the 3°.

Lastly Entered Apprentices were readmitted, salutations given, and W Bro Phil Cowling presented the appropriate Working Tools.

Investment of officers for the year was next, as each office was called the recipient moved to the dias to collect his collar with W Bro Eddie playing suitable music for the various roles. His selections are very clever and never fail to make me smile.

At was at this stage I noticed that both Senior and Junior Wardens had roundles on their aprons illustrating the Level and the Plumb rule appropriate to the Wardens Chairs. I had not seen this in any other Lodge and considered it worthy of note.

The Addresses were given next, W Bro Eddie Wildman gave the Masters Address, W Bro Peter Robson gave the Wardens Address and W Bro Jimmy 2 kilts Kerr gave the address to the Brethren. The IPM presented the Warrant, W Bro Russell Garbutt sang the Masonic Anthem Hail Masonry, and the ceremony was done.

After correspondence and the Risings (he didn't get up) the Lodge was closed. We reassembled for photographs after which we moved down to the bar for refreshments and the festive board.

The New Master was paraded in with the Representative, Grace was said, and we feasted on Paté with Crusty Bread roll; Beef Bourguignon with seasonal vegetables, and Fruit Salad with ice cream

The meal was accompanied with red or white wine and followed with port, tea and coffee.

The evening moved on to the 'Grand Finale' when we started the Toasts. The King, The Grand Master, The Pro Grand Master, Grand Officers, Provincial Grand Master and then Provincial Officers, to which W Bro Tony Randle responded.

Bro Ian Montgomery proposed a toast the the new WM and his team, after which W Bro Jimmy 2 Kilts Sang the Masters Song. W Bro Forbes responded with his usual grace and charm and was presented with a signed menu card from all the Brethren present.

W Bro Jimmy Kerr proposed the toast to the outgoing WM and His Team; IPM Malcolm Brocklesby responded and thanked his team for their hard work. The Junior Warden Bro Mike Kelly gave the Absent Brethren toast and Senior Warden Bro John Holmes gave the visitors toast, to which W Bro Malcolm Grange, WM of Wyke Millennium Lodge 9696 responded. Drinks were getting low now, thankfully we were at the final toast, the Parting Toast, Happy Meet Again. And we shall. We departed home with Eddie riding in the back after having had a good evening out.

Monday 6th October 2025:

 A Chamber of Horrors

Arriving at Beverley Road Lodge just before 6:00, who knew what was in store for the evening? The DPGM Bill Glanville's better half was to present " The Black MUseum" of New Scotland Yard. 

First though, there was the routine of signing in both car and self, meeting and greeting friends old and new, and then getting ready for the Lodge. Tonight was a White Table with Ladies present, as my better half Julie was unavailable I chose not to dine.

The Worshipful Master Ian Sydall has stepped back from Masonry following the passing of his daughter, so W Bro Bill Glanville took the Chair. The Lodge opened and the minutes approved, we ballotted for a joining  member. Reports followed; quickly we were on to the risings  and on the third Bro James Wright stood to give greetings from the Province's newest Lodge: Semper Paratus 10076 a first from that Lodge I believe. The Lodge was then closed.

The Tyler was sent to bring up the Ladies and once the room had settled Julie Glanville Introduced herself and her subject. As a Retired Principle Crown Prosecuter she had occasion to visit this place that is not open to the public. In it are stored relics from some of Englands most henious crimes. 

As you enter there are two rooms, the first contains knives and weapons all of which have been used in crimes. There are nooses that have hung some of the worst killers and there are face masks of those killers. 

A fireplace displays photographs of Jack the Ripper's victims and a letter that he supposedly wrote. There are books with theories about links to Freemasonry and Jack the Ripper, but these cannot be substantiated.

Passing into the second chamber there are displays of some of the worst murderers in the 20th century including, Dr Crippin, the first criminal to be caught by telegraph, Christy of 10 Rimmington Place fame, John George Haigh, the acid bath killer and many other horrors. 

I enjoyed the presentation and I hope the Brethren enjoyed their dinners after such horrors. I made my way home for an early night.

 Thursday 25th September 2025

Demonstrating the 1°

We gathered downstairs prior to the meeting, a number of changes in attendees meant roles had to filled. Could I do Inner Guard? I will give it a go!

Then it was moving up to the Lodge Room, signing in, putting on the collar and getting ready to receive the Worshipful Master and his Wardens. The Inner Guard's emblem is two swords, crossed, symbolising the Officer's vigilance in protecting the integrity of the Lodge by resisting non-Masonic visitors. I took up my post and tried to look fearsome. Soon the Lodge was in place and opened.

The business tonight was an enactment of the first degree ceremony, the Candidate being Bro Marland Falkner who was only initiated last month, the purpose being that he familiarise himself with the ceremony.

The ceremony was re enacted in its entirety giving the Brethren a chance to work their ritual. Special mention to Bro Ashley Fairburn who delivered the Warrent and Book of Constitutions faultlessly.

After reports and risings the Lodge was closed. We retired down to the Lounge for drinks and the Festive Board. The meal was a Chinese with Spring Rolls and Satay Chicken Kebabs for starter, Sweet and Sour Prawns, Chicken Chow Mein and Veg Noodles for the main. I had Cheese for dessert.

We had two toasts and the Tyler's toast and the evening was bought to a close by singing Auld Lang Syne. A good evening all round!

 

 

Friday 4th July 2025:

Double 1st @ Brough 5464

Sutton seemed extremely busy, parking was awkward. I squeezed myself  between a van and a car and made my short walk to the Lodge.

Upon arrival W Bro Alan Hatfield asked if I wanted a meal. Strange I thought, till I checked and found I hadn't sent the email saying  I was coming! Brough bailed me out and I ate, but more about that later.

As usual the greetings were many and friendly, many familiar faces were there. I worked the room passing greetings etc. until it was time to sign and assemble. I made my way up to the Lodge Room and took a seat  behind the Active Escort reserved seats. It is from here I get the best view for taking notes.

The Lodge was opened in due and ancient form, the W Master Paul Garthwaite seemed to be in a hurry to get things moving. Greetings were given to Grand Lodge Officers and W Bro Eddie Wildman gave his response.

There were loud knocks at the door, W Bro Ben Kelly (Provincial DC) was at the door and requested entry. After wishing us Good Evening he announced that the APGM, W Bro Steven Cox was at the door and he demanded admittance. "Admit him under your guidance," said the WM. First an Active Escort of Provincial Officers filed in, then APGM W Bro Steven Cox came in and took the Chair.

After introducing his team he relinquished the Chair to the WM  and we carried on with the agenda. First was the minutes and the ancient charge, this was followed by the investment of officers who were absent from the installation. This was followed by the Almoners report and a Eulodgy for Bro Mike Quiller (we stood in silence while Eddie played Abide with Me.)

"There is an alarm," declared the Inner Guard. "See who seeks admission," ordered the WM. At the door stood the two candidates, Mr Richard Woodmansey and Mr Mark Wilshire, properly prepared and looking slightly nervous. (we have all been there). I will not repeat the ceremony here but it was conducted with the solemnity and respect that it and they deserved. Once obligated the ritulists could demonstrate their skills. first The lesser lights were given by Bro Paul Young (Inner Guard) The Secrets (In Humber they call it Communications) by Bro Nigel Goldthorpe (L 5666), NE Corner by W Bro Tony Christmas. The Working Tools were explained by Bro Danny Marshall, and the Warrent presented by Bro Kevin Woodmansey (Father of one of the candidates). The Charge was given by the Chaplain, Bro Brian Tiplady. The newly made Brothers now left the Lodge to restore their comforts, All of the ritualist performed well but the stand out was Bro Nigel Goldthorpe of Technical Lodge, a seasoned performance.

When the newly made Brothers returned we closed the Lodge and after a photo opportunity we proceeded down for the Festive Board.

We claimed our seats and the WM and APGM paraded in; after grace the starters were served. It looked like Chicken Kebab, as a veggie I had soup! The main Course was Meat Pie, Chips and Peas, dessert was mixed berries with cream followed by Cheese and Biscuits. we gave thanks and proceeded with the toasts.

The first four toasts were submitted and a short biography on the visiting Ruler was given. The APGM responded with reassurance about joining masonry and giving ritual.

The two proposers gave their toasts and the New Brothers responded and we all sang the EnteredApprentice Song. For the last verse we formed a Masonic chain and W Bro John Wilson gave a short recital before the WM sang the last verse.The APGM presented signed copies of the song to our new made brothers and then he and the team took their leave. 

The Junior Warden Matthew Harvey gave the Almoners Toast and the WM drew the raffle, The Senior Warden Chris Walklet Gave the Visitors Toast to which W Bro Fox, WM of Beverlonian Lodge Responded. 

It was getting late, I overheard someone say they had never been in Lodge this late, as W Bro John Wilson gave the Parting Toast, "Happy to meet again". And we will.

Thursday 26th June 2025:

The Humber Mouth

At the bus stop on Princes Avenue I asked a youth, also waiting for a lift into town, if he knew whether a bus was due. He shook his head, and then addressed me in the delightful Hull accent: "A dernt nerr. Al lerk an the yapp," which for those non-indigenous folk reading this blog means he confessed ignorance but would consult his mobile phone for the requisite information. I thanked him sincerely and learnt that the bus was currently hurtling down Newland Avenue, so we wouldn't have long to wait.

I'm increasingly frustrated by galloping deafness, and though I constantly remind myself that my father suffered hearing loss only in his forties and I'm in my seventies, I should be thankful, it is still a trial. Having to concentrate with my good ear on what someone is saying to me while my deaf ear struggles with the ambient noise detracts significantly from enjoying Masonic meetings, and not all the Brethren are polished speakers.

"Am gerring strate ter Paragon," the driver warned, so I alighted at Prospect Street, looking forward to pausing for a coffee as I made my way to Dagger Lane. "Wear clersing in foive minnets," warned the girl at Costas.

It being the holiday season - those schoolchildren having taken their exams and awaiting results were out in force doing their summer shoplifting - the Old Town area was pleasantly full but I managed to find an establishment that would let me enjoy a peaceful double caffè macchiato before visiting the Lodge. At Dagger Lane the Lodge of St Michael Lecture Master was busy allocating pieces of ritual to the Brethren - holiday absences led to some tweaking. The WM's wife had apparently booked a holiday for her husband and herself without telling him, so W Bro Whittall's place was taken by the IPM, W Bro Leslie Thornett. Visitor Tony Calvert stood in as IPM. Peter Stokes stood in as Junior Warden. My good friend Terry Lynn agreed to be Tyler ("It's cooler outside the door," he remarked. "Yeah, it's mafting in ear," said John Burton (SD) with the peculiarly Hull word referring to high temperature. David Broughton stood in as Junior Deacon, and his job was to escort the Candidate Mr Marland Faulkner through his initiation ceremony.

I'll not detail the event: it was all good. I was impressed by the ADC, Bro Ashley Fairburn, who delivered the Warrant and Book of Constitutions flawlessly, and by Peter White who stood in as Inner Guard. Under the stern direction of the stand-in DC, W Bro Peter Wright, the ceremony flowed beautifully and Brother Marland Faulkner left the Lodge to restore himself to his smart suit with a smile on his face.

During this intermission, I took the opportunity to direct the attention of the Brethren to the Masonic words used at the closing of a prayer or hymn: "So Mote it Be." The phrase is from Old English and it appears in the 15th-century Regius Manuscript. But in the Hull accent it sounds more like "Ser mert it bee." I exhorted the Brethren to consider the purity of the vowel sounds, heard five times in the initiation ceremony, but my increasing deafness failed to detect any change.

Brother Faulkner returned for the Ancient Charge, delivered from the West by the Senior Warden, W Bro John Broughton, who'd been tasked with this lengthy piece some ten minutes before the ceremony. W Bro Thornett congratulated the Candidate and directed his attention to the Lodge Mentor, W Bro Steve Prior and gave him a welcome pack from the RWPGM.

A succesful ballot followed, greetings were given - it was a pleasure to see the WMs of Brough and Beverlonian Lodges with accompanying Brethren there and the Lodge was closed in due form with the singing of the closing hymn. Ser mert it bee.

Terry Lynn and I sat together at the Festive Board - both of us a bit deaf. Like me, Terry was fighting the ravages of age. "I said to the doctor," he told me, "that I wasn't going to put up with it. I've enjoyed a full life of wine, women and song." "Well," the doctor said, "you'll be able to keep up the singing."

Peter Stokes toasted the Candidate, outlining his busy career moving from the military to caravans and then on to IT consultancy. Brother Faulkner responded sincerely and fittingly, having appreciated the ceremony very much, he said. "He's a good lad, that one," Terry remarked during a lull in the conversation, "he's already reduced the average age of the members."

David Broughton drove Terry and me back home - thanks Dave! It had been a fulfilling ceremony, followed by pleasant food in good company. Who could ask for more? I bid my friends farewell in the distinctive Hull idiom as Dave drew up beside my house: "Ey up, ear yer go, yer ont rerd - ta-rar!"

Tuesday 17th June 2025:

A Second Degree at HOG 5129

I rushed from my house at 1750 thinking I was running late, only to arrive at Dagger Lane and find the meeting didn't start till 1900 and I was therefore early! Although the numbers were small this early I was greeted well and warmly, Also in attendance at this meeting were W Bros Eddie Wildman and Peter Wright, both also in advance of the rush from the Hull Old Grammarians.

After exchanging greetings we commented on the Funeral we had attended yesterday of W Bro Graham Reid's Wife Caroline,  She will be missed. RIP Caroline.

Time was passing so after I finished my Tonic Water I dressed and went up to the Lodge, I passed the DC W Bro Geoffery Branton, going to call the Brethren to sign and assemble. 

As the Lodge Room filled W Bro Eddie Wildman played appropriate tunes on the organ until the DC announced "Be upstanding to recieve your Worshipful Master and his Wardens". They paraded in and when at their stations the WM Duncan Taylor opened the Lodge, Salutations were given to Grand Lodge Officers present and then the minutes were approved and signed (Eddie played Postman Pat.) 

It was time for the main event, the Passing of Brother Simon McDonnell to Fellow Craft. First came the Questions; in Humber Ritual these are passed between the Wardens at the close of the first degree. These being answered satifactorily Bro Simon, after passing round the Lodge, was given the figurative pass key to re-enter the Lodge in a higher degree. He then left to prepare.

The Lodge was raised to the 2° and Bro Simon was re-admitted under the guidance of the Senior Deacon Bro Charlie Cordeaux, and after proving to the Wardens that he had the key he was taken to the pedestal where he was obligated. He was now able  to learn the secrets of the Second Degree and these were presented to him by W Bro John Plater who despite some confusion over left and right did a splendid job.  

Bro Simon was once more led to the Wardens to answer questions on the secrets, He was then presented with the badge of a fellow Craft by the senior Warden. Making their way to the South East Corner Bro Cordeaux gave the Adress at the SE Corner and , as with his Deaconing he was word perfect.

Bro Simon was now moved to a point in the North side of the Lodge and the working tools were given by W Bro Stephen Pickard, an excellent rendition especially as the working tools in Humber Ritual are far longer that those in Emulation.The Chaplain W Bro James Mackman then gave the Charge. This ended the ceremony of the Second Degree and after saluting the WM Bro Simon left the Lodge to restore his comforts. The Lodge was then restored to the first degree for further workings.

Bro Martin Smith was then called to stand and was collected by the DC and bought to the center of the Lodge where W Bro Eddie Wildman presented him, poetically, with his Grand Lodge Certificate, This drew a round of applause from the Brethren.

The Treasurer took center stage next and asked the Brethren to Ballot for the exclusion due to non payment of a member. This was carried. 

At the risings Salutations were given 1st) Grand Lodge Officers 2nd) Provincial Officers 3rd) Visitors (I gave greetings for St Michael 7833) and then Lodge members. After AOB the Lodge was closed and we made our way to the bar and the Festive Board.

WM Duncan generously bought the visitors drinks, (cheers Duncan!) and we took our seats at the tables. The meal was Pate on Toast starters, Chilli con Carne with Rice and chips flollowed by Cheesecake. The Brethren tucked in! We only did two toasts after thanks were given and then after the parting toast it was time to head home, After dropping Eddie off I reflected how lucky I am to enjoy such evenings. Thank you Old Grammarians!

Saturday 7th June 2025:

Brough 5464 Installation

Didn't we have a lovely time the day we went to Sutton! I picked up the Worshipful Master David Whittall and off we went for a big day out.

The occasion was the installation of a new Worshipful Master at our Mother Lodge, Brough 5464. Parking is never easy but we found a spot reasonably close to the lodge and walked there enjoying the sunshine. Upon arrival we were well met and greeted, I exchanged my E Comp pinny for £20 for the Lodge charity fund then set out to enjoy the day.

The lodge was opened promptly in due form, After knocking the representatives DC W Bro Marcus Wheratt was admitted,he anounced that W Bro Tony Randle  was at the door and wanted to come in, Admit him under your guideance said W Bro Tony Christmas the WM of Brough. AN escort of Provincial Officers was formed and then the representative came in, After salutations we proceeded with the agenda.

A portion of the ancient charges was read, followed by approval of the minutes. There were Almoners and Charity Stewards reports then the Lodge was raised to the second degree.

In the second, the installing teamwere put in position W Bro Andrew Chan IDC, W Bro Steve Bisby I Chaplin,  W Bro John Wilson ISW, W Bro Gary Bennett IJW, W Bro Brian Fletcher I Inner Guard. The Master Elect, Bro Andrew Garthwaite was briefed by the WM, Read duties by the secretary to which he gave his ascent, then he was obligated as Master Elect. The Lodge was then raised to the third degree. The lodge Officers paraded round handing in their collars, then all below the status of installed master left the lodge and a board of Installed Masters was formed. This is not the arena to say what took place next but suffice to say when the board was closed the W M, W Bro Andrew Garthwaite, had been Installed and the IPM invested. 

The Master Masons were recalled to the lodge and the DC Proclaimed that in their absence W Bro Garthwaite had been installed into the chair of King Soloman. Bro John McKinnon presented the working tools for this degree. The Lodge was lowered to the second and Fellow Crafts were re admitted. A second proclomation was given and the working tools were presented by Bro Paul Young. The lodge was again lowered to the first and the Entered Apprentices were re admited, presentation of the working tools was by Bro Kevin Woodmansy. The Warrent and Book of Constitution was given by the IPM, after investing his Officers for the year came the Address to the Master Given by W Bro Gary Chambers, Address to the Wardens Given by W Bro John Wilson and Address to the Brethren given by W Bro Mel Harmer. The Masonic Anthem was sung at this point and this concluded the ceremony of instalation and the WM thanked the Installing Team.

There being no other business the Lodge was closed in due form, after which some photgraphs were taken before proceeding down to the festive board.

We were seated near the Senior Warden as W Bro Whittall was returning the visitors toast, The conversation at the table was good and friendly banter prevailed, as a meal of Prawn Cocktail, Cold Meat Salad and a desert of Strawberries and Ice cream followed by Cheese and Biscuits accompanied by wine and port. After thanks were given the toasting could commence, The King, The Most Wonderful Grand Master (Whoops it must be the occasion) Grand Officers, PGM, Provincial Officers with a responce from W Bro Tony Randle. W Bro Tony Calvert proposed the next toast to the Worshipful Master, the Masters Song was sung (Didn't get the name of the singer but he was a ringer from another lodge) W BroANdrew Responded with thanks to all who had helped him on his way. W Bro Alan Hatfield proposed the toast to the outgoing team commenting on difficulties experienced and overcome. W Bro Christmas responded thanking his team and senior lodge members for their help and support.

Next up was thevisitors Toast proposed by W Bro John Wilson, Our WM responded with respect to the ritualists thanks to the caterers and a nod to how well we had been received, he even told a joke!

Sadly time was getting on, the Junior warden proposed the toast to Absent Arethren, The singer once again regailed us with Happy to meet sorry to part, then the tyler gave his final toast, happy to meet again, and we will be!

Monday 2nd June 2025:

Humber Installed Masters 2494, Presentation

There are roadworks at the entry to Beverly Rd Lodge, I only mention this as they are right over both entry and exit. Getting in and out is chaotic.

Upon arrival I met up with W Bro Mike Shakesby of Brough Lodge,he was at our installation and enjoyed the occasion. I noted there were not as many attendees as at previous meetings maybe it was the traffic?

Upin the lodge room Chaos reigned as the secretary had the equipment cupboard key and the room was not prepared. Luckily sister lodges members had access to their cupboards and were able to provide gavels etc for the Master and Wardens.

I think the excitment had got to the W Master who lost his way with the opening (the IPM put him right)

After opening the minutes were approved and signed and a ballott for two joining members was taken. (passed). 

Next was a presentation by W Bro Ken Ayres entitled "Ken's BSA Collection" (with exhibits) I was expecting Motor bikes but it turned out to be air guns. The air was thick with gun oil as vintage pistols and air rifkes were displayed and discussed. He also touched on firearm control and the laws surrounding posession. An interesting talk and thanks were given by the Brethren and the W M.

We had an Almoners report and a Charity Stewards report then the risings. the lodge was duely closed and we retired for the Festive board.

Pate with toast followed by Pork Chops then Strawberries and ice cream, was enjoyed by those who attended, We only did two toasts and a raffle and we finished relatively early (for which I was grateful)

Thursday 22nd May 2025:

Installation

The WM, W Bro Les Thornett opened the Lodge at 4:30. The early start time discourages visitors, but it is necessary: in 1962, the year the Lodge of St Michael 7833 was consecrated, the Founders insisted on adopting a ritual so thorough in its exposition that even a normal ceremony can end much later than visitors expect; the Installation ritual is especially hefty.

W Bro Thornett opened with confidence, and after greetings were given to UGLE and Provincial Officers, a report from Provincial Grand Steward Mark Cusack informed the Brethren that W Bro Nick Mitchell, representing the RWPGM requested admission. An escort was formed and he was conducted in with dignity. Salutes were extended, the minutes were confirmed as being in no need of amendment by the Secretary, W Bro Stephen Prior, who was relinquishing the role to W Bro Alex McAllister later in the evening.

Slightly out of sequence, as the Officer delivering the information was to take the Chair later, reports were heard from the Almoner/Charity Steward, W Bro David Whittall. The Lodge was raised to the 2° (there were no Entered Apprentice present) and thereafter Offices were declared vacant and senior Brethren took the Chairs of the Wardens, Chaplain and Inner Guard.

The Installing Director of Ceremonies, W Bro Paul Henderson presented W Bro Whittall to the WM, where, after solemnly agreeing to abide by the rules and regulations previously agreed in 2006, W Bro Whittall took his obligation. Fellowcrafts retired, the Lodge was raised to the 3°, and then, with Master Masons below the Chair also retiring, to a Board of Installed Masters.

I shall not comment on the Inner Working except to say that it was beautifully managed; the Working Tools were presented by W Bro Terry Lynn. Now with W Bro Whittall established in the Chair the Lodge was lowered, the readmitted Brethren perambulating as W Bro Peter Stokes sang the Masonic Anthem. This being the Lodge of St Michael, the long closing was used in the transitions between degrees. Bro John Burton gave a well-paced delivery of the 3° tools, Bro David Broughton the 2° and W Bro Stokes the 1°.The Warrant, Bylaws and Book of Constitutions were presented by W Bro Henderson, after which the WM invested his Officers. (Domatic ritual requires a set piece of ritual to be learnt for the investiture of each officer.)

The new Secretary gave the address to the WM; W Bro Peter Wright addressed the Wardens, exhorting them to emulate that they deemed praiseworthy and abjuring defective practice. Bro John Burton gave the address to the Brethren flawlessly.

Solomon diplomas were acknowledged by the Representative, W Bro Mitchell to W Bros Stokes and Chapman. The IPM presented the Rep with a sizable donation to Festival 2029, which was gratefully received. Greetings were given and the Lodge was closed in due form.

It was a lively festive board. The fifth toast saw an eloquent response from W Bro Nick Mitchell, who had enjoyed the ceremony and the gentle humour which in no way detracted from the excellence and dignity of the ceremony. He congratulated Peter Stokes on his Chapter appointment as Provincial Grand Steward (see  25th April on the Chapter Blog) and spoke of the importance of Festival 2029 (£600,000 collected so far.) He encouraged the Brethren to register on the Provincial website (it's free) and promoted the Portal App for finding out when and where Lodges and Chapters meet.

W Bro Alex McAllister gave the toast to the new WM, citing his excellence as an experienced FM (Lodge Supersub) and looking forward to a promising year ahead with his willing and eager team. W Bro Whittall responded, thanking W Bro Terry Lynn for the excellent rendition of the Master's song. "My job is to keep us on course," he said, thanking his willing volunteers, "I'm am proud of you all and sure of success."

W Bro Jackie Chapman gave the toast to the IPM, who had had an excellent year with varied ceremonies and social functions. W Bro Thornett responded briefly and fluently, remaking on how quickly the year had gone by, and thanking his team.

Vocalist Peter Stokes, submitting the Almoner's toast reminded the Brethren that the unique song to Absent Brethren sung in the Lodge of St Michael was composed by two founder members. The Song "Brethren from the East and West" followed W Bro Longthorpe's toast to the visitors; W Bro Tony Burke, Grand Lodge Officer, responded with kind words. The raffle continued my unbroken losing streak.

It was a happy afternoon and evening and the Brethren departed with the song "Happy to meet again" and Brother Burns' traditional "Auld Lang Syne" resonating in their ears. Well done, Lodge of St Michael!

Saturday 10th May 2025:

A Day at the Racecourse

It had been a long time coming, but Convocation was upon us. W Bro David Whittall was driving and arrived to collect me at 0700 sharp. As an ADC in Chapter he had rehearsals and I had booked an early PSA Test. 

I met up with some fellow promotees of Prov Grand Steward Chapter on the meeting floor and we exchanged greetings over a cup of tea. At 0930 we dressed for the Craft Meeting. By this time the room was quite full but I bumped into W Bros Terry Black and Stephen Prior from our Lodge before going up to the meeting.

Once seated the grand parade in commenced, In no particular order, Masters of Lodges, Grand Officers, Other Orders Heads, Visiting PGM's and Senior Officers from sister Provinces, APGM's DPGM  and lastly our PGM The Very Worshipful Dr David Chambers. Then the Grand Lodge was opened. We cruised through the agenda: State of the Province, Finances, Management groups and other changes, then on to promotions, sadly our Lodge was not due any promotions on this occasion but we were happy to see friends  from neighbouring Lodges get well deserved honours. 

The PGM's address was next, a "well done but watch for changes!" No change there I guess: Masonry is evolving to meet the demands of modern working practice, it is we who have to change whilst maintaining our traditions, a great balancing act.

After any other business the Lodge was closed and we made our way to lunch. I am not a meat eater but a starter in bread crumbs and a main in bread crumbs showed a lack of imagination in my opinion, the veggie option was no better over roasted cauliflower on an endive leaf with sultana starter followed by wild mushroom rissoto, el dente to sticky, not the best and quite expensive.  

The afternoon was for the Chapter, when we assembled the room was sparsly populated in comparison to the morning,  Once again the great and good were paraded in and the Chapter was opened. Once again we proceeded through the agenda and we got to the promotions bit. We, the new Stewards were called up, as I stood to join the line my Provincial badge revealed it wasn't firmly attached and dropped off! Nothing I could do about it now so I went and got my Active Jewel with my patch in my pocket!

After the PGM's Address (same as the morning one) the Chapter was closed and we made our way out. Excellent Companion Whittall had a family occasion to get to so we departed promptly and no photographs of us were taken, but you know what I look like (hard to miss!) 

In conclusion, a long day and it being hot didn't help. I think a lot of Companions were flagging at the end. The quality of the food wasn't great maybe sandwiches will be a better option next time.The PSA test was worth the discomfort and I'm pleased to report my result was favourable.

Wednesday 7th May 2025:

A Masterly Presentation

Kingston Lodge 1010 enjoyed an excellent presentation of the 1° Tracing Board by W Bro Tom Cawkwell, WM of the Andrew Marvell Lodge 5642 and Secretary of Minerva Lodge 250. Tom's delivery is not a dry recitation, but a comprehensive look into the features of the Tracing Board, explaining the details in a stimulating manner; no-one can fall asleep during his lectures! The Worshipful Master, W Bro Michael Price expressed the feelings of all present when he thanked W Bro Cawkwell for his outstandingand enlightening delivery before closing the Lodge in due form.

The Beverley Road festive board was as sumptous as ever and on this occasion there were only two toasts, so in addition to being well satisfied both mentally and physically, the Brethren retired earlier than usual to their respective homes having enjoyed an excellent evening.

Thursday 24th April 2025:

Business as Usual!

Tonight it was my turn to drive, we wanted to be at the Lodge for 18:15 to meet W Bro Peter Barnes' taxi. We were early; so was the taxi. Oh well.

W Bro David Whittall and I went in and were greeted well by the Brethren of the lodge, the talk was about the upcoming meeting and who would be the next Master.

The meeting opened promptly at 19:00 and after opening the Lodge we set about the agenda. Minutes confirmed, there being only one volunteer for the positions of Master and Treasurer both applicants were deemed successful, Master Elect W Bro David Whittall (left) and Bro David Broughton (right) as Treasurer for a further year. Well done to both and we wish them a succeesful year in office.

The Charity Steward proposed we donate £1000.00 to the Festiival Fund at the Installation Meeting in May, after a short discusion this was voted on and passed.  

Treasurer's report: it appears we have been living above our pay grade and we need to put the subs up. Outgoing expenses exceed incomings so a vote was taken and the subs will rise.

A discusion was held on the future of LOI, due to low numbers attending due to work commitments; was it viable? Again this was discussed at length and we will retain the evening and use the space for rehearsals and teaching as deemed nessessary to bring Brethren up to speed, but the formal LOI will be held in abeyance for the time being.

The ballot was prepared and we balloted for a candidate, The ballot was favourable and the Candidate will be invited for initiation in June.

We received the Almoner's report and the Charity Steward's report, and lastly a Chapter report before AOB and Propositions and then Closing the Lodge.    

We proceeded down for the festive board: Butternut Squash Soup, Pork Chop with Seasonal Veg and Potatoes; Fruit Crumble or Cheese board for dessert. 

The raffle raised £70.00 and after the toasts we linked arms and sang Auld Lang Syne, then made our way homeward: a job well done.

Thursday 27th March 2025:

A First (Rehearsal)

After Monday's rehearsal I approached tonight with some trepidation, we all seemed a little out of sorts! As we gathered in the bar area pre meeting I noticed a large number of visitors from sister Lodges particularly Hull Old Grammarians 5129  and Old Hymerian 6885 Lodges. Both Lodges had bought along a new initiate to witness the tracing board, (more on that later.)

It was good to see W Bro Terry Lynn back in the fold and W Bro Peter Barnes with us once more.

Robing and making my way to the lodge via the signing in book, I took my seat next to the WM's Chair. The DC W Bro Paul Henderson announced "the time is upon us be upstanding to receive the Worshipful Master and his Wardens." They paraded in without the regular accompaniment of the organ as W Bro Wildman was cruising around the Indian Ocean. 

After welcoming the visitors W Bro Les Thornett opened the Lodge.

Confirming the minutes as per the agenda we moved on the the First Degree rehearsal. Bro Steve Norman was the chosen one (victim) and he left the room to be made ready. Soon after there was a knock "Whom have you there?" said Bro Ken Battie. "A poor Candidate" replied the Tyler, W Bro Peter Wright. Having confirmed all was in order he was admitted and the Wardens quizzed him. The ceremony moved on apace and soon the Candidate was obligated and being given the Secrets by W Bro David Whittall. W Bro Alex McAllister gave the Address at the NE Corner, then it was my turn to present the Working Tools, I don't claim to be a great ritualist and I think my efforts proved I am not! W Bro Stephen Prior gave the Warrent, Book of Constution and the Bye Laws.      

After the Candidate restored himself to his comforts it was the Star Turn of the evening: Bro John Burton with the Tracing Board. Historically this was used by the Master of the Lodge to show Masonic teachings; these days it is a fixed item with allegory and symbols, and Bro Burton explained it fully to our initiate and the initiates from sister Lodges, His explanation had a mastery of one confident in his undertaking and I would recommend anyone who has not seen the explanation to attend when Bro Burton is giving his presentation. That is a well done JB.

The next longest piece of ritual in the ceremony is the Charge, normally given by the Chaplain. Our Lodge is no exception so the Chaplain W Bro Terry Black stood to give the Charge. This he did faultlessly and then the ceremony was over and we returned to the agenda.

The Almoner and Charity Steward gave reports and then the Chapter Representative gave his. Under Propositions, I proposed a joining Candidate and W Bro David Whittall seconded it, he will be balloted for in April. In AOB the treasurer Bro David Broughton gave Notice of Motion for a Proposed rise in subs and discontinuing the Country Member Scheme.

After the risings and greetings the Lodge was closed in due form and the WM and Wardens paraded out to the dulcet sound of the unaccompanied closing hymn.

WIth twenty-three sitting for the festive board and Lodge members serving I and others assisted the Steward Bro Steve Norman. Soup was followed by Chicken pie with seasonal veg, mash and roast poatoes, then  Jam Sponge and custard.  

We proceeded with the toasts, the first five being submitted by the WM and selected Brethren. The Almoner's Toast was given by W Bro Whittall and we sang the St Michael Song for absent Brethren. The Visitors were toasted by Bro John Burton JW and responded to by W Bro Mark of Hull Old Grammarians, W Bro Peter Wright Gave the Tyler's toast then we formed a Masonic Chain and sang Auld Lang Syne before heading for home happy and full.

Thursday 27th February 2025:

Brief Meeting

It was a short meeting at Dagger Lane: the business to be discussed and voted on was was obviated by circumstances and the Brethren instead enjoyed a poetic contribution regarding the roles of the officers delivered by the Lodge Preceptor, W Bro Jackie Chapman. On being questioned by one of the Brethren, W Bro Chapman explained the meaning of the word "Worshipful" in its Masonic context citing the Wycliffe Bible (1384) "Worship thy father and thy mother" in the Gospel of Mark, chapter 7, which in later translations has become "Honour thy father and mother" and the practice of addressing a magistrate with the honorific "Your Worship." (Circuit judges are addressed as "Your Honour." It is a term implying respect. He addressed the Worshipful Master (W Bro Leslie Thornett) directly, noting that it is not until one has taken the Master's Chair that the term "Worshipful" applies in the Craft.

W Bro David Whittall gave back-to-back reports as Almoner and Charity Steward and the Chapter report was given by W Bro Peter Stokes. No formal propositions were made, but there were suggestions regarding future meetings and the Charitable disposition of funds.

Greetings were given by me as WM of the Humber Lodge 57, and from W Bro Graeme Reid of the Hull Old Grammarians' Lodge 5129.

The closing was efficiently managed and eighteen of the Brethren dined at the Festive Board (Lasagne). This too was brief; it was very cold in the dining room so the DC W Bro Michael Henderson decided upon the first two toasts (to the King and to the Grand Master) and concluded with the Tyler's parting toast, given by W Bro Peter Wright, after which the Brethren formed a Masonic chain to sing Auld Lang Syne.

Thursday 13th February 2025:

Old Hymerian No 6885 Installation

I set out for Beverley Road Lodge early due to road works in my locality. I even found another set on Cottingham Road! The old adage of spend the last of the budget or we will get less runs true still!

Arriving at the Lodge I was greeted well by both Old Hymerian stalwarts and guests alike, all that visiting seems to have got me known. I logged my car in and paid for my supper and waited for our WM Les to arrive. It was good to see the lodge so busy it has the makings of a very good night. Upon his arrival  Les signed in and we made ready to go up to the Lodge room.

Taking our seats we had a good alround view of proceedings: as Hymerians are an Emulation Lodge we should be familiar with the order.

They do not parade in and the opening hymn was to a different tune but the same result and the Lodge was opened.  Some late arrivals were admitted and PPGM Jeffery Gillion was given Salutations (Lucky he had arrived.)

There was a report,  W Bro Ashley Tyson APGDC was at the door asking to come in. "Admit him," said the WM.  He anounced that W Bro Steve Hall, representing the PGM was at the door requesting entry. !We will let him under your direction."

A Provincial Escort was formed and the Representative entered, after saluting the WM he took his seat and was given salutations from the rest of us.

The Installing Team was formed consisting of W Bro Percy Little Senior Warden, RW Bro Jeffrey Gillyon Junior Warden, W Bro Alex McCallum Inner Guard and W Bro Anthony Cadle, Director of Ceremonies.

The Lodge was cleared of Entered Apprentices and raised to the Second Degree. The Master Elect Bro Malcolm Cuthbert was positioned in the centre of the Lodge. The WM, W Bro David Waddington, then recited the Duties of the Master, the Master Elect agreed to these. Then the Secretary read out the Charges and Regulations from the Book of Constitutions, again the ME signaling his acknowledment. He was then Obligated to the duties of Master Elect.

The Lodge was cleared of Fellow Crafts and then raised to the Third degree. All Offices were declared vacant and the Lodge was then cleared of Master Masons. A Board of Installed Masters was formed and The Master installed into the Chair of King Solomon. His first Duty was to invest his IPM. This done the Board was closed.

Master Masons were invited back in to the Lodge, after giving Salutations the DC declared from the east for the first time, that Malcolm Cuthbert has been installed in the Chair until the next period of election. The working tools of a Master Mason were presented by Bro Andrew Walters then the Lodge was lowered to the second degree.

Fellow Crafts were invited back in and after salutations the DC declared the WM until the next period of election, The working Tools of a Fellow Craft were presented by Bro Simon Coperman, The Lodge was then lowered to the first degree.

Entered Apprentices were invited back in and salutations given. The DC declared from the South that the WM had been installed until the next period of election. The working tools of an Entered Apprentice were presented by Bro Joshua Hornby.

As an aside all the Working tool presentations were to the highest standard: well done to those presenters.

After investing the Officers we had the addresses as below.

The IPM then rose and presented the Warrant and Book of Constitutions. 

The address to the Master was given by W Bro Graham Bate

The address to the Wardens was given by W Bro David Greendale.

The Address to the Brethrren was given by W Bro Robin Aulden. This ended the Installation and we carried on with the Agenda.

A Ballot for a new candidate was carried. Another, to award £500 from the Charity Chest to Open Reach, a Charity for Refugees was carried and the reports were read. Next was the risings with Salutations from Grand Lodge Officers, the Representative bringing Salutations from Province and visitors from Individual Lodges giving greetings. At this point W Bro Graham Hunter accompanied by W Bro Eddie Wildman sang the Masonic Anthem. After this the Lodge was closed and photo opportunities taken.

We retired to the bar for refreshment before dinner was served. The meal consisted of Garlic Mushrooms on Toast, Roast Gammon with roast potato carrot and cauliflower cheese, apple crumble or cheese and biscuits. After Thanks were returned we began the toast list with the Master giving 1-5 and the Representative responding to No 5.

No 6, to the Master and his Officers was given by W Bro David Greendale and the WM responded, W Bro Andrew Crozier stepped forward to W Bro Wildmans accompaniment with the Masters Song. Toast 6 The IPM was Given By W Bro Simon Ramshaw and W Bro Waddington responded. Toast No 7 was Sister Lodges and Visitors Proposed by the Senior Warden and W Bro Eddie  Wildman responded an amusing joint round Old School Lodges and persons within. I think everybody was laughing at the end.

With just 2 Toasts remaining The  WM gave us some Parish Notes Then Swiftly on to the Tylers Toast and finally The Parting Toast. Happy have we met Happy meet again....and we will.

Friday 7th February 2025:

A Tale of Two Lodges

Lord Bolton Lodge 3263 

A regular unassuming Lodge meeting with a short agenda, but the provincial glitteratti were there in abundance from The PGM down. There must be something afoot. I'd made my way down to Beverley Rd Lodge room early as there were expected to be a lot of attendees. Upon entering the Lodge there were a lot of faces, some familiar some not so. I signed my car in and stowed my case and started to circulate amongs the gathered Brethren. Attending as part of the Provincial Escort was W B John Broughton; we spoke briefly before I was joined by our WM W Bro Les Thornett. We circulated a little bit more before robing and making our way to the Lodge Room.

The Lodge was opened, an oddity I noted was during the opening the Tyler was bought into the lodge to explain his duty, in Emulation Lodges the J Warden does this. Once opened, there was a report, WBro Karl Ward Provincial DC was at the door requesting entry. "Admit him," said WM W Bro E Gwatkin. "At the door of your Lodge is the Provincial Grand Master and he demands admision." " Admit him under your direction."

First the Escort of Active Officers, Then the Grand Lodge Officer Followed by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master and Finally The Provincial Grand Master Himself. After Salutations, the minutes were signed, reports given and the risings completed and the Lodge was then closed.

Lodge of the Glittering Star No 322 (Irish Constitution)

We remained where we were and the Members of the Travelling Lodge Glittering Star No 322 under the Irish Constitution set up the Lodge Room for their ceremony. 

The Secretary sits in the North There is a table in the centre of the Lodge displaying working tools and the Bibles. Before we could commence the Deacons circulated around the Lodge proving we were Masons.

Once we were proved the WM W Bro G M Lates led in a parade of Grand Officers (Irish Constution) The PGM, DPGM and UGLE Grand Officers. The Lodge was declared open, and confirmed by the Wardens and we then sang the opening Hymn, O God our Help in Ages Past.

Next came salutations to Grand Lodge Officers, this was given by Running Fire with 11 Claps.The visitors were also saluted with Running Fire. The Lodge was then cleared of Entered Apprentices and declared open in the 2nd degree. The Candidate for Raising was then taken out to prepare. The knocks used for the degree were simlar but different. I only recall this as there seemed a lot of knocking!

The Lodge was then declared open in the Third Degree with the Wardens once again confirming. The Candidate, Bro Captain Mark Giles was readmitted with a password given by his companion escort. He was paraded round the Lodge three times whilst we sang The Lord's my Shepherd. He was then stood before the table and told to kneel. In this position he took his Obligation with the Senior Warden at his side. The DC, W Bro C MacDonald gave the Secrets, the Secretary V W Bro D Monk gave the signs, the Obligation was explained by his Escort and "Fifteen Fellow Craft" by The S Warden V W Bro Maj A Darlison.The Great Lights were presented by the DC and the Chaplain read the Charge to ensure the exact wording was used. This ended the Raising and there being no further business in this degree the Lodge was lowered to the Second, (no song or dance). There being no further business in the 2nd degree the Lodge was lowered to the First.

There was the presentation of an Irish Constitution Grand Lodge Certificate  after which came the risings where the Visitors were saluted with running fire by the Lodge members. The Lodge was then closed and the great and good gathered around the dias for photographs. 

 It was late when we went down to dine so we quickly made our way to our allotted seats, We were served Soup, Roast Beef or Salmon with potatoes and veg Followed by Eton Mess or Cheese Board.

I sat and talked with a W Bro Maj M Christmas of the Glittering Star Lodge and he filled me in about the history and origins of the travelling Lodges, a very knowledgeable mason.

By permision of the PGM we only did two Toasts and the Parting Toast: Happy have we met, happy meet again.

Monday 3rd February 2025:

Humber Installed Masters Lodge 2494 Installation.

The installation is always a busy night so I left early to get a space in the car park. The car park was filling fast so it was the right decision.

When I got into the Lodge I bumped into W Bro Eddie Wildman, always a pleasure to see him. There was a sea of faces, all familiar, must work harder at remembering names. I signed my car in, stowed my case and made my way to the bar for a full fat tonic! On the way to the bar I met Master Elect Ian Syddall who explained he had sent me an e mail but hadn't sent it and could I join the stewards team? How could I refuse!

Having consumed my drink I prepared for the Lodge by putting on my regalia and made my way upstairs.

The W Master opened the Lodge (with some new words!) and greetings were given to the great and good assembled. The expected knock happened and W Bro Andy Hinchcliff was admitted, "At the door of your Lodge stands W Bro David Burnett representing the Provicial Grand Master, can he come in?" He was admitted under guidance of W Bro Andy preceded by an escort. Salutations were given and responded to, then on with the main event.

W Bro David Johnson was appointed Installing DC, who being reassured there were no Entered Apprentices present, presided as the Lodge was raised to the second and the Master Elect (W Bro Ian Syddall) was obligated. The Lodge was further cleared of Fellow Crafts and then raised to the 3rd degree. All offices were declared vacant. Those below the degree of a Master Mason retired. A Board of Installed Masters was formed with solemn prayer and the New Master was Installed into the Chair of King Solomon. The Board of Installed Masters was closed.

W Bro Syddall was declared Master from the East, West and South, The working tools at each point being delivered by W Bro David Johnson , MM, W Bro Terry Fisher, FC, W Bro Tony Calvert, EA. 

The addresses wereto the Master, Wardens and Brethren were given respectively by W Bros Richard Smedley, Eddie Wildman and Adrian Hayworth. The final act of Installation was the singing of the Masonic Anthem by W Bro Richard Smedley accompanied by W Bro Eddie Wildman. The agenda was then resumed.

A ballot for a joining member, Jimmy 2 Kilts was passed this was followed by reports and risings after which the Lodge was closed.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

After photographs we proceeded down to take our seats for the Festive Board.

Once seated and Grace said we were served with Cream of Broccoli and Stilton soup, Roast Pork with Crackling or Salmon in Hollandaise sauce, Raspberry Panna Cotta and Cheese and biscuits.

After this we proceeded with the toast list with the WM giving the first five and the Representative responding to the fifth. Toast six was given by W Bro Terry Fisher and W Bro Ian Syddall responded. W Bro Richard Smedly and W Bro Eddie Wildman were called upon once more to perform the Masters Song and we all joined in for the choruses.

W Bro David Johnson proposed the toast to the IPM and his officers, W Bro Bill Glanville responded and Richard and Eddie performed a new song to the tune of Bless this House for the IPM.

The Visitors Toast was given by the Senior Warden W Bro Chris Thomas and the Absent Brethren toast was given by the Junior Warden W Bro Richard East. Once more Richard and Eddie were called upon to sing the Parting Toast: Happy to meet sorry to part but happy to meet again.

Saturday 1st February 2025:

Which Way Now?

An overcast Feb morning, quite early, W Bro David Whittall arrived at my door to transport me to Nether Poppleton, A land where Provincial Officers explain their functions(!) and the great and the good wear mufti. 

Upon arriving and parking we made our way to reception where we logged in, a simple tick box process, and then enjoyed a cup of tea each from the lady volunteers. 

Seeing a lot of familiar faces we split up and went to say our hello's. At 09:25 we were summoned to the lecture hall where the first part of the day was to commence. 

After an opening address with promises of more to come from the PGM Dr David Chambers, we moved swiftly along to the presentation of Solomon Certificates for those who have completed the Solomon Modules, over thirty were presented. Well Done all.

The floor was then given over to PSG's to introduce their function and personel and how they were there to help your Lodge/Chapter to improve. Some had previously been Management Groups now with a user friendly title . . .

We took a short toilet break and completed the presentations just in time for lunch, sadly lunch had not arrived so we waited and chatted about what we had heard and agreed that mostly it made sense!

Lunch was a buffet consisting of sandwiches and sausage rolls, pork pies and quiche. Also there were some cakes. It was very nice and free!

In the afternoon I took part in a discussion on Community Engagment, We covered how we as a group are perceived by the community and how we could interact to change this. Some very innovative ideas were put forward and let's see if we can engage more from our own Lodge?

A short comfort break was followed by a presentation on Mental Health and Well Being, 

This was a cue for the final words where the PGM gave us the figures for the Festival: £600k so far, a great start. Some initiatives that are coming from UGLE are based on the 3rd Column Report and we can expect more changes. Well life is about change is it not?

Congratulations to W Bro Sean Carroll and his organising team for a job well done.

The talking over David and I made a hasty escape to head back to Hull and watch the Rugby game that was on. Don't mention the result!

Thursday 23rd January 2025:

First Lodge of a New Year

We were going to initiate somebody into freemasonry tonight, but due to a family bereavement in his family he was not available. Adaptable as ever W Bro Jackie Chapman came up with an alternative discussion.

Before we goon to that let me relate how I got to last night meeting. About 530 I was collected by W Bro David Whittall, we the drove to Brough (into the new estates) to the care home where W Bro Peter Barnes now resides.Here we met a specially equipped taxi for wheel chairs.The driver manouvered Peter in and set the holding straps for the chair,we then embarked on the journey to Dagger Lane. We desembarked and entered the lodge via the Kitchen Door, stress free for Peter and stress free for the brethren who had previously driven him in. Well done W Bro David Whittall in your role as Almoner to investigate and put this plan into action .

Arriving at the Lodge it was sad to see that so few brethren would be dining,mostly due to illness or their daily avocations keeping them away. Wish all who are ill a speedy recovery.

The meeting was opened in due and ancient form and we sang (after a fashion) the opening hymn. After signing the minutes the first item on the agenda and the main talking point for the evening was LOI. Should we retain it in it's current format, should we keep it at all or is there a modification we can do to make it more appealing. These points (and others) were discussed at length and a letter will be sent to all members for their point of view to decide how to proceed.

Item 2 was reports then a snippet was read the subject being Robbie Burns, who, coincidently was born on 25th January.....Burns Night! Who would have guessed. 

Under Any Other Business was quite busy with the Treasurer and Preceptor both vying for time. 

There being no further business the lodge was closed and we processed out for a festive board.

We were treated to Starter haggis, nips and tatties, or tomato soup, Braised Beef with Yorkshire pudding roasties and Mash, Carrot and Cabbage, Dessert was Fruit Crumble or individual cheese board.

After which we toasted and we raffled the prize won by Bro John Burton and raising £70.00.

After a rousing verse of Auld Lang Syne we boarded the waiting taxi and took Peter Home. A succesful night for Peter.
